My Uncle Dewey was a bomber mechanic in North Africa during world war II. This was in the things my mother had kept of his. Has what I believe is a Turkish coin on both sides. Writing is in Arabic (I assume, it's all Greek to me lol).
This is Egyptian rather than Turkish.
The portrait is of King Fuad I (26 March 1868 – 28 April 1936) was the Sultan and later King of Egypt and Sudan, Sovereign of Nubia, Kordofan, and Darfur.
The coin bears his portrait that was designed in 1929 by the English coin designer Percy Metcalfe.
Brings a bit of history to contemporary events and to the "Arab spring".
Trench art lighters of this style are typically WW1 era.
It is nice to find one from WW2 with similar styling.
Some of the best WW2 engraved shells that I have seen come from North Africa as well. The art of quality metal working was retained in that area.

Thanks for the information, don't have any idea where he got it so it may well be older than WWII. I just know that's when he was there.
Vetraio's comments that the coin was designed in 1929, supports the WW2 era.

your lighter was manufactured in asmara eritrea by one of the most important lighter makers of the 20th century. it is a common shape but very collectible.
