They are heavier than most glass ornaments. Does anyone know why?

Hello, you have a German made ornament known as a Kugel, which translated means sphere or ball. This is a very early ornament. It is heavy, because before the Bunsen burner was invented it was not possible to make thin walled ornaments which were made in the early 1900's. The Bunsen burner was invented in 1855, so the kugel pre dates this time. Kugels do not have a pike to which a lead cap was attached for hanging, instead was a hole and this was covered by a brass cap . The problem was that they were too heavy to hang on a tree.
Kugels will also be found in different shapes such as eggs, grapes, pears, and bells. They were made in twelve colors based on variations of greens, blues, rose, and golden, which is very common. I hope this helps.
