Found this Today at the DAV Red Racks Store. 49.98 was the price so I had to jump on it!! Measures just over 8 ft long and 5 ft 6 in high. All hand painted on canvas laid to large heavy wood panels. Stunning piece early 1900's, no idea of value because I never seen one this size. Thanks!!

Its a Wonderful piece, has 2 small boys playing flutes while the couple dances. Little dog on his back legs dancing as well. People just sitting on the lawn and watching. People on a bridge near the water. Thanks for the info. I was thinking it may be older but didn't know how much older. I know the ones from 1900 period were mostly wood frames with canvas stretched over a wood frame making it more lite weight. This one is solid wood panles and very heavy. Dizzy

GREAT piece and a steal for $50!

I wouldn't necessarily date it to the 18th century based on the wood panels. As with any antique, they are often reproduced in a similar manner as the original. This style was very popular during the Victorian era as well as the 20th century.

The painting looks to be in fantastic condition, which would lead me to believe it is later. Take a look at the hinges, look for wear patterns of use and age-- that will be a good indictor of age.

I cannot tell the era, but I would say that even if it were Victorian era its value far exceeds your purchase price.

      Good luck with your research,

      Scott

Hey Scott, As I stated in original description, I thought maybe 1910 or so but then I did look at henges and thought maybe a little earlier around 1890'ish?? I see more screens in this style and manner in this time period on internet.

      Yes sir.

I think you're on the right track. My post was to present an opposing viewpoint to the "solid wood panels would definitely place it at an ealier date proably late 17th or early 18th century".

I think even if it were a modern decorator piece (I am NOT saying it is), it would be worth ten to fifteen times what you paid!
