my grand father gave me this watch jewlers said it may be an 1800's watch but wouldn't tell me unless I sold it to them I'd just like to know more about it.

In order to tell you more about the watch you will need to provide photos of the case (the back of the piece) and also the inside of the case and the movement. As a rule of thumb, if the back screws off then the watch is most likely gold filled. If the watch has a hinge at the bottom or a fingernail size slit near the stem, it is most likely a precious metal. If you look in your local yellow pages for a Horologist or clock and watch repair service, they can open the watch and tell you a great deal more. Best of luck.
