I usually prefer chatelaines to have all their chains but just couldn't resist this one. I bought it in 2009 for under $100. It is marked sterling but doesn't have a maker's mark.

love it. Hate to be picky, but back then, grown people looked like that central face. The cupid one. Any idea of it's age? I would say late 1880's, but would like to know if the auctioneer had any idea

Actually the "cherub" or putti was a popular design in the late 1800's. Peterson's, Godey's and Arthur's all have illustrations with them especially in their Christmas issues. The photo is unclear: there is only one face. This was purchased at a charity online auction and was even listed as jewelry not as a chatelaine which it most clearly is. It's interesting how rapidly things change. I have photos of my grandfather's friends from 1905 that don't resemble a cherub at all even though they were still teenagers.

Kirby1911 - I should have said some people looked like a cupid, shouldn't have I? Glad we agree on the date it was made. It could have been a chatelaine for a dentist

it kinda looks like the top half of a skull on the figure above the cherub... anyone else see it?
