These were carried by Medics, Later they were called 'Battle Dressings', it may have come from a medical set........
We were given those during the late 1960's. You had a special web pouch to carry it in. Somewhere along the line they started issuing newer and smaller ones. I guess they were getting rid of the old stuff first. Even the c-rations from the early 1940's were still good if you were really hungry.

Yep, I remember these as "Individual First Aid Field Dressings, but I'm not as old as this "dressing, shell." The instructions however read about the same as the instructions on a first aid field dressing though.
It was intended that each soldier carry one in a web pouch, so that if a soldier came across a wounded soldier, he could apply first aid using the wounded soldier's dressing (not your own because you could be wounded later and be without one). Medics must have carried several of these in their kits.
Oh, and I just noticed "RCAMC" on it. That stands for Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps" - which would explain the different nomenclature.
