My friend came across this Elgin pocket watch the other day while going through some of his late fathers personal items. I just happened to be there to see his findings. This watch immediately caught my eye. It definitely has been around for some time. He had no idea where to begin on researching this time piece, so of course I had to jump in and help. So here I am and I would love to know more about his pocket watch. The front of the case is worn and it looks like there is a plantation house inscribed within the gold. The back of it looks kinda like a fruit of some type..I'm not sure. I just have a lot of questions and would like more information on the value of his findings. Plus how to restore it back to its natural beauty. The serial Number is 227347. Thank you.
Hi, I have some info on your watch. Based on the movement serial number, it was made in 1872 by the Elgin National Watch Co. of Elgin Illinois. It is an 18 Size, Gilt Movement, I believe from the pictures to be a Model 2 or 3. It has a precision regulator. The case is "Hunting" style, meaning it has a cover over the Face, and is probably Lever Set, set by pulling out a lever around the edge of the face. I collect and restore these watches. Any questions, let me know. Dave Jacobs, CW21, Certified Watchmaker, AWCI. Beaverton, Oregon
@ djwatchmaker I'm not sure, but if this was a 1872 model, would the dial only say National Watch Co. In 1874, the company officially changed its name to the Elgin National Watch Company. was just wondering, any info would be apprecated. Best Regards, Kerry
Here is my 1873 B W Raymond, note the dial only has National Watch Co.

The Serial number is from 1872. The Dial should say "National Watch Company" if made in 1872. Was the serial number you gave from the Case or the Movement? Only movement numbers can be used to date most watches. My serial number listings say 1872 for that number. There is always a possibility the dial was changed at some time, also. dave
Thanks for the reply Dave, I was thinking that also, just wanted to verify that.
