Hi all,
I found this pre-publication draft of Tom Constanten's "autobiodyssey" at a goodwill store in Brooklyn, NY. I collect this sort of self-published material, and buy galleys or draft copies of unpublished books when I get the chance. I didn't realize what a gem I had found until I looked up Tom Constanten. He was the keyboard player for the Dead from 1968 - 1970.
This draft pre-dates the publication by a few years at least, but coolest of all is the note that was inside the pages. The note is a print out but at the bottom, is a hand-written part that says, "Happy Reading! Incidentally... might you have an extra copy of "Raggedy Ann" lying around? Best, T"
I did some research and found that Relix magazine did a cover of Jerry Garcia holding Raggedy Ann for an issue in 1980 (February I think). I'm curious as to who owned this book before me and wonder what their connection would be to Tom and why he'd be asking them about Raggedy Ann.
Does anyone know of any Raggedy Ann reference - other than the Relix cover - he could have been making? And who was this note intended for? Was it someone who worked for Relix? Someone involved with the band? Anyway, I wanted to share my find and see if anyone had any thoughts on the mysterious note, maybe find out who the book belonged to before me. Any thoughts are welcome!
Thanks!
