I have a very old globe. I do not know a lot about it, except that it has been in my family a long time, and I am 71. One thing I know is that it is big. The globe is 60 inches in diameter (150 cm); in the floor stand, it is 39 inches tall (100 cm). The width is 30 inches (76) cm. The center rim is very decorative depicting all the zodiac signs. This globe needs a good home or globe collector.

You might find some information here: http://globemakers.com/ Don't know how long it's been around your family but, if since 1988 it could be a Greaves & Thomas globe. If it predates that, it could be a Merzbach & Falk production from the late 1800s-mid 1900s. If you contact Greaves & Thomas at the globemakers.com site, they would probably be able to give you more info if you provide them with some good photos.

I have a miniture one of Greaves & Thomas' which I found last summer in a thrift shop in Toronto ON. I got it for CA$2.99: http://globemakers.com/facsimile/globe_oyoy.html

      Hello there,

I regret to inform you that your globe is not very old, it was probably made in the last 40 years as an "Olde Worlde" globe, the company is/was based in italy and has made many thousands of globes bearing the same "repro" map. You might find their kitch Drinks Cabinet Globe looking very similar but it is designed to open at the equator to reveal a selection of alcoholic drinks - possibly to enable the owner to lament over their investment.

Value - sadly they do not have much value $20-$100 on ebay if you are lucky.
Please note that the globe illustrated is not 60" diameter but looks more like 18".

      Hope this helps,

      James Bissell-Thomas
