Tatting is making lace, edging for doilies, pillowcases, etc. Almost like crochet.
I'm reminded of the expression 'old tat'.
'tat'

Lace was expensive.
Tatting was a cheap alternative to lace.
Secondhand lace was called 'tat'.
Old lace was discarded and became 'old tat'.
By extension in Cockney London anything second-hand was 'tat'.
In the sixties second-hand dealers were called 'tatters' or 'totters' scornfully.
In my youth I was called a 'tat-queen'!
I liked buying stuff from 'tat shops'
These days 'tatting' is respectable and is called 'collecting'.
