Yamaha G-50 A Classical (Nippon Gakki Co. Ltd.) originally sold between 1969-1972. Spruce top, Katsura back/sides, Nato neck, Bubinga fingerboard & bridge. I'm not finding any other distinguishing serial numbers anywhere, other than the aforementioned model # on the sound hole label, so no exact year known.

I picked this up about 6 years ago at Eastern Market in DC from a nice man who sold/sells old odds & ends up near where all the jewelry & crafty stuff is sold. It was just sitting out on the sidewalk in the blistering hot sun and had a rather significant sunken area between the sound hole & bridge. After several months of being in my home, the top came back up, almost flat. Has a real nice sound.

I will get some better images up a lil later.

Hi, Yesterday at a yard sale I purchased a G-50 nippon gakki co. Yamaha guitar and as I was not familiar with that particular Yamaha I was wondering the history of it and it's value. It's in excellent cond., it seems to be all-original and has a great tone to it. Any info here is much appreciated! Aundie

      Hey aundie,

I'm not sure what the difference is between the G-50 and the G-50A (what I have), but I'd say mine is probably worth $200, based on it being in good (not excellent) condition. So, as long as yours is in decent shape, i.e. straight neck, no body cracks, no major finish dings & scratches, it should be worth somewhere close to mine, but I would just do some research. Compare prices/values online and average it out based on the condition.

I have a Yamaha G-50 A Classical and the label inside is exact but does not say (Nippon Gakki Co. Ltd.) ???

Not sure what that means honestly, but it could be that it's a Post-Nippon Gakki made guitar... i.e. it was made a little later, and perhaps holds less value than the Nippon Gakki Yamaha's of this style/era.

Thanks for the comments about my guitar find! I'm keeping it regardless of it's value. It plays well, has a nice tone and goes well with my vintage Gibson flattop. Guess I, in some circles, may be considered a bit of a vintage model myself!!!

I have a Yamaha G50A that my dad bought new for my 16th birthday in 1970. In 1978 I took lessons from Ricardo Fusco in Memphis, TN. (classical & flamincan guitar master). He said my Yamaha had better tone than his expensive guitars!!!

Someone please help solve this mystery. I picked up a Yamaha G-40 student sized classical guitar several years ago and have never found any information about it. I've searched and searched. Can anyone tell me approximately when it was made? I cannot tell from the serial # if it was made in 1973, 83, 93, or what? Help!
