I have read up on these openers and the history of Dr Pepper and have learned that these were promotional advertising items and the slogan stamped on this opener was in use between 1920 and 1940. I have not found much on when these particular openers were made (20's, 30's, or 40's) or how common they were. I have seen a lot of Coke openers but never a Dr. Pepper (except this one).

This one was in a canvas bag my grandfather kept his stencils in. He used these during the Great Depression to paint names and addresses on mailboxes for extra income. The dark coloring is from rust - I had to brush a lot off to be able to read the fine print (Vaughn Chicago). Though the stencils were brass, the opener is steel and was at the bottom of the bag which spent most of it's days on a concrete floor. I imagine the moisture wicked through.

Just hoping to learn more about the setting of my opener.

I noticed the image is fairly dark: the top on one side reads "DRINK A BITE TO EAT" and "DRINK Dr. Pepper" on the other. The bottom on both sides reads "AT 10, 2&4 O'CLOCK". There is small lettering after the words Dr. Pepper that reads "VAUGHAN CHICAGO".

I read on Pinterest that this bottle opener was introduced in 1923. It seemed very believable as the information given went into vivid detail about Dr. Pepper at that time, as well as marketing gimmicks used by Dr. Pepper, including slogans and mascots. Crown cap was invented in 1892. Wire style openers were first used in early 1900s..
