Hello!! My name is Robin and this is my one and only Kewpie! She was given to me by a lady that lived down the street from me as a child. My Dad and I would go over to her house to help her with outdoor tasks she was unable to do. One day after picking up sticks and twigs from her yard, she paid me w/ this Kewpie. She told me about how when she was my age, she went to a fair and won it there. It was very old and very delicate, she said. I took it home and my mother kept it in her cedar chest for me. Until today. This is the first i have seen of her in MANY years. I think I saw here one other time after we moved or something like that. I never forgot she was in there. She has 1913 on her back. the white mark on her back isn't from where the paint came off, it is part of a sticker or something. i can see some residue. I read somewhere that the originals had a red sticker on the back. Obviously I have no way of telling what color the sticker might have been, only that there was something there. I am 41 and received this when I was 6 0r 7. She was probably 80 yrs old, which if you do the math would date this pretty darn close to 1913. I cherish her very much. BUT I GOTTA KNOW- What's up with the eyes?!?
Hoping someone can tell me more about this pudgy little funny eyed gal!! Thanks!
I've not heard of the red sticker on the back but do know they had a red heart sticker on the chest. My wife has several 100 Kewpie's, not seen one like this. There is a great group on facebook for Kewpie's
I don't know for sure, but I've had some of these kewpies as "molds" that were sold to paint a long time ago -- so I wonder if perhaps the original owner painted the hair and eyes? They look that way to me --- but I would refer to the Kewpie experts. Good luck!
I wouldn't think it would have been something she painted. She specifically told me it was won at a carnival/fair by her or maybe for her?!? Can't remember. Of course I am the one asking, so I can't say. It also doesn't feel like a raw painted piece of ceramic. I am so curious!!
