Hi lundy, on Mundy here in Oz!
Italy on pottery is a very un-Italian thing to do. There is no "Y" in the Italian alphabet. It suggests 'twentieth century': imported goods needed to have country of origin written "in English" (and not Italian) on them to satisfy Tariff acts.
The style of devotional item is called "della Robbia"; Catholic devotional art suppliers catalogue it under that name. They also give you a spiel about:
"Della Robbia , Florentine family of sculptors and ceramists famous for their enameled terra-cotta or faience. ....... Luca della Robbia, 1400?-1482, founder of the atelier, was known first as a sculptor in bronze and marble. ....... Later he perfected a process for making clay reliefs and figures permanent by coating them with a glaze compounded of tin, antimony, and other substances. In his panels and medallions, the Madonna and saints and angels usually appear in white on a blue background, sometimes with touches of gold and color in the decorative setting.......... Andrea della Robbia's sons, Luca II, c.1480-1550, Giovanni, c.1469-c.1529, and Girolamo, c.1488-1566, carried on the family tradition into the 16th cent."
And they are still being made today.
holy moly are you good thank you im going to look up della robbia thanks again
i cant find it on line i find a lot of baby jesus and others but no christ thank you
Hi I just re-read what I wrote about Italy. For the last 100 years a lot of Italian artisans have been forced to put "ITALY" on objects. Some of them were illiterate in Italian and certainly in English. When you look at some of the written marks you can see how unfamiliar they were with not just the letter "Y"!
It was definitely made in Italy.
Italian marks are a whole story in themselves. Cities & towns are important.
Italy did not exist before 1861.
March 17, 1861 was the date of the 'Unificazione". (150 years last year)
PhilDavidAlexanderMorris is right about the date. The image of Jesus is a bit unusual, though. It is an image of what is called "the Sacred Heart".
Wikipedia says:
"The Society of the Sacred Heart (Society of the Sacred Heart of Jesus) is a Roman Catholic religious congregation established in France by St. Madeleine Sophie Barat in 1800. It has presence in 45 countries. Membership to the Society is restricted to women only. Its members do many works, but focus on education, particularly girls' education. Because of its origins, educational work, and character, the Society is sometimes considered a female equivalent to the Jesuits, or Society of Jesus. Members use the suffix "RSCJ" which stands for Religieuses du Sacré Cœur de Jésus or Religiosa Sanctissimi Cordis Jesu or Religious of the Sacred Heart of Jesus."
