Found this old smudge pot in a little thrift shop today. It has the original red paint and it cleaned up pretty well. It has a heavy cast base making it very steady/stable. Still has the wick which is so long it curls around inside the pot. My understanding of this item is it was used back before flares or lights were used for notifying drivers of traffic hazzards. This item would be filled with kerosene and placed in pot-holes etc. The image to the far right was before cleaning it up. Any info/date or valuation is greatly appreciated.
They were also placed at the bottom of Prospect Hill in my home town to signal the street, which was quite steep, was closed to traffic after heavy snowfalls.
And OPEN for the best sledding any kid could dream of !!!
