I have just aquired this Princess Margaret Rose Doll. She is 21" high and wearing a blue dress. I have been searching and searching and cannot find any information on the PMR in a 21" doll in blue. I have seen a shorter one in a pink dress but not this. I would love any information about this particular doll. I believe she is from 1946 but I can't even find her in a book. Is it just random that she has a blue dress? Were there many 21" Princess Margaret Rose Dolls? Thanks for any little thing!

Yes they had long dress's when made in hard plastic and several styles . She should be marked on neck Alexander and dress tagged Alexander . Made for about 4yrs 1948-52 about . The first ones were more younger versions of her as a toddler and had shorter dress's .Princess Margaret Rose was the younger sister of Britain's Queen Elizabeth. In the late '30s, Alexander made her as a toddler doll with the Princess Elizabeth face; this more grown up version with the Margaret face dates from 1946.
      Sold
one in yellow like yours . Yours looks like maybe it is composition is it ?

Hope this answers your questions she is lovely .

I need to correct this . At first glance your doll looked like hard plastic but I am inclined to think she is composition that dates her a bit earlier . MA did dolls with such good quality composition compared to many other companies they hold up well and don't crack as much . Since you can hold doll is she Compo ? What a wonderful size too ! the large 21 " All original . Her mohair wig could be fixed easily but don't do it if your have never worked with mohair a lot will fall out and you have one chance to get it right , don't do a lot of combing . Wither her hair set she would be beautiful .
Hope the photo in yellow dress on link helps and that your mystery is solved :-)

Hi-thanks so much for all the info. I believe she is composition as she has slight crazing-is this correct? Are they more valuable if they are compo and larger? Do you have any idea why I can't find her specifically? I am glad you brought up her hair-I have been trying to decide if I should get it professionally redone, which I believe would be an easier decision if I knew her value as she stands. Also, is any doll hospital better than any other? I believe there used to be one in Bellvue WA., which is sort of close to me-any suggestions? I think she would be so much prettier with her hair corrected but not sure if I should invest the money? Thanks for your time, I love sites where people share info!

...oops, I forgot to add on my last post that I put in a different photo of face close up. I just wanted an opinion on her coloring, as I thought her make-up still has pretty good color, but not sure what others thought?

Hi sillygirl , Yes she is composition and that is why her dress is different also than 2nd link . The one that it going up for auction next mo it just like yours only dress is yellow
I would not pay to have her hair done UNLESS you plan to keep her and it is for you . I worked with a doll museum and doll hospital and did a lot of hair more than I want to remember . They have to know what they are doing and also do the right style not just a bunch of curls . Because there is so much hair loss during this process you don't want to repeat it. I would put a hairnet on her and leave it . She is wonderful and her hat covers hair . Her value would be be over 200 I would say to 400 depending on bidding more ! However doll prices have fallen in past few yrs . She is not common to find and would do well even in todays market . I have lots of dolls books so I could locate her . If you lived in WI I would do her hair free but we are miles apart . I still do hair on dolls . Now if you decide to have someone do it no water should get on her face or body ! It will make paint raise up and crackle so I would keep her in a temperature controlled room since she is compo no severe heat to cold and she will last forever :-)

Oh her face color is very nice on last photo you put up not as yellow looking as first photo . For her age she is in Excellent condition ! Not Mint but Excellent and I love her :-) Did you buy her or is she a childhood doll ? If you leave her on stand don't put the wrap around dress put in under dress with a soft piece of cloth to protect her body . Her dress should fall smooth in time .Always glad to help and share CW is a great place to do that :-) Any more questions just let me know ok I will try my best to answer . I can't set a for sure sale price on her as there is so little market to research none that have sold recent . So the one I sent that will go to auction bookmark and remind me I will be bale to see what she sells for :-)

Hi Manikin, Thanks again-I love to learn all I can about the things I collect and you have been so helpful. Yes I would love it if you have time to look her up! I just bought "200 years of dolls" thinking it would be a different sort of book, a fun book, but not really helpful to me. That's so kind, being willing to do her hair-if only I was closer. Looks like I missed you by a few weeks-I was in WI about 7 weeks ago! I guess I will leave her if it is as hard as you say, I would feel horrible if someone messed up her hair! I would love to see the one going to auction next month. Let me know what your books say about her-I look forward to it!

Oh I guess I am confused because the lik to the yellow dress doll says it sold for 175.00. Is there another going up-or am I missing something? She was given to me by a friend of my father (not a childhood doll for me- I am "only" 47) who got her as a gift when she was a girl. She is around 72, so the 1946 year makes sense. I think she had her put away for years. Thanks for giving me stand info, it was going to be my next question! Hope I'm not asking too many questions, like I said, I just love to learn about the things I have. I am a collector of many things!
    10. Manikin Manikin, 13 years ago
Your right she sold to a online bidder for 175 .00 that person also pd a buyers premium of likely 15%-20% and shipping which they never disclose . Sorry There was another one up for auction also I thought I need to re look . But figure they pd 200.00 for her plus shipping and Tax close to 250 total . Sorry if I confused you :-) It was my fault not yours .

That's okay, let me know if you see another go up. I looked at your photos-very very cool! Love the old family photos and the stuff you have-especially that lamp-WOW! Also noticed you like old cars so thought I'd tell you-my wonderful husband gave me a '54 Ford Cresline for my 40th birthday! It's a 4 door-we had 4 kids at home at that time.
    12. Manikin Manikin, 13 years ago
Wow I am going to tell my husband that ! Maybe I will get a car too LOL
Thank you for stopping by my posts . I love my lamp I remember it forever and still wonder how it survived at farm with people always coming and going and lots of kids :-)
    13. SillyGirl, 13 years ago
I hope you do get a car! Let me know if you find the 21" princess margaret rose with the blue dress in any of your books, I am so curious to see another that's exactly the same!
    14. Manikin Manikin, 13 years ago
I will keep looking through books for same color dress . I am sure no car is coming my way :-) Your doll is so wonderful and not so common as other madame Alexanders . Doll prices will come back up or the one at auction would have gone higher it is the economy but hopefully it will get better soon. She Blue Books much higher . Was a real pleasure seeing her too ! So glad you shared her on CW

Oh I just saw you were in WI a few weeks ago ? wow I am near Milwaukee were you close by ? I have family in Seattle WA :-)
    16. SillyGirl, 13 years ago
Hi again, We were in Peshtigo, which is a few miles from Menomonee MI. Very small town. I believe it's about 4 hours from Milwaukee. We usually fly into GB as it's about 40 minutes away but did fly into Milwaukee once. I thought it was very pretty there, lot's of cool old houses-I love that. I am from Seattle and still have my brother and sister there now. What part of Seattle is your family? We are now in the San Juan islands which is just shy of Canada. Very pretty here, but have to take a ferry to get anywhere so lot's of people wouldn't want to livc here. It's great for the kids though and I love the water!
