WW#2 era helmet, very heavy to wear!
This piece was from a friend who was over working for the military.
He was given it by a" Brandtweer" ,not sure if thats how you say/spell it, but it was a German firefighter.
Looks like something from "Hogans Hero's"! Cheers!!

Hi Scott, I believe the topper to be strictly decorative, although it would add a great deal of ridgidity to any other helmet, this sucker does'nt require any more of that, it's as solid as an old Buick!!
Back in the day, a piece like this would add a bit of deflexion to the top in the event of bricks/stone/slate shingles etc. coming down, they would'nt be hitting you square in the head, it would deflect somewhat.

You are forgetting that this is for firefighting, not war. This helmet is so solid that a brick to the head would not hurt the helmet, but still hurt the head/neck, this added piece might help slightly in rare instances, but not much.I guess what I'm saying is it does have somewhat of a purpose, but is also mostly for show. It also helped differentiate the firefighters from the army, as the helmets are very much alike, just different color and no "hood ornament" . Cheers, bernie
