I bought this fazzoletto vase at the Surry Hills markets about ten years ago and it has remained a bit of a mystery to me. I have found one similar on the Chance glass site (chanceglass.net) and they attribute it as a possible Chance piece.
Chance is an English glass firm with a long history going back to Robert Lucas Chance in 1828. They made glass for the Crystal Palace in London in 1851 and the greenhouses at Chatsworth House. In 1945 the company was taken over by Pilkington glass. They specialised in flat sheet glass.

I suppose another way of using flat glass is to create these handkerchief or 'fazzoletto' vases. The form became an icon of the modernist period and these versions by Chance were cheaper to make and more cost effective than the Italian products made famous by Venini and the artists of Murano.

The edges of the ruby glass have been bevelled and the gilded.

I'd appreciate any comments you may have about Chance glass.

      It's about 25mm thick = 1/10th of an inch

      Height is 9.5 cm = 3.7 ins
Width is 15 cm = 5.9 ins at the widest point.

Many thanks scandnavian_pieces, toolate2 and Dean @ MuranoGlassArt too.
This one I think is not so difficult to achieve as the Murano pieces.
I think it's more a piece of pressed glass.
