No, this is a town about 2 hr drive from here. Living in a very small falling apart town is interesting, but it also has its disadvantages. Domino's will not deliver, and I have to travel over 60 miles to get to a Veterans Hospital. On the bright side, rent is cheap.

It is the medical care that would concern me packrat . Do you have a fire dept or para-medics ?
    5. packrat-place packrat-place, 13 years ago
The fire department is all volunteer. Para-medics are 12 miles away. Serious cases are air-flighted to San Antonio. There is no sewer system, everybody has septic tanks.
The school was on its own water well until about three years ago when they hooked up to a water system. No police live here, 12 miles away.

Wow packrat be safe ! 12 mi is pretty far away . The good thing is you don't have a water bill like we do and rent is very expensive here . I think I will send my son there to live in one of the old houses a good place for him and his dogs but are there any girls there :-)

I also live in a rural area with a few falling apart towns, Brainerd is 14 miles away. I live in the middle of what was once a very active mining are with many little towns in between the mines. Some of the towns still survive like Ironton & Crosby which is where I went to school. I lived out in a town called Riverton which at one point had many business, a school, fire dept, police etc. All centered around the Iron ore mines. As a teenager we used to party in the abandoned school, it was a huge building built in 1915 I think or in that time period. Shame to think of all the sweet picks I missed out on. Partying was more on my mind then pickin. I can remember at least 4 stores that had been boarded up since the 40's. Nothing remains of what Riverton was in its prime, nothing but houses now. Same thing with all the other little towns like Trommald & Cuyuna. I will have to take some picks of all the old mine ruins that are still around. Thanks for your post, it has inspired me to document what is left of my home town area.

Geat story vintagemad. These old towns need to be documented before they are all gone. What stories they could tell.
