Axe/Tomahawk/Hatchet

My Dad picked this up at an auction and we are trying to find some information out about it, unfortunately the auctioneer or anyone else at the auction could answer the mail on it. It was cheap so he picked it up. I tried to find out what its use and origins where but have not found anything or even where to start until I stumbled across this site.

Does anyone know what it is? How old it is? What it would be used for? What is the stamp on it?
