I am needing everyone's advice on this! I am considering fully restoring this old gas/fluid measure, it is a 5 gallon fluid measure from the Wm Neil Co of Chicago. It was REALLY dirty when I got it but it cleaned up to this condition really well. I love the old paint color and am torn between restoring and just leaving it (makes a good walking stick/cane holder). The graph area is very nice brass and just with a little cleaning it shined up nicely. I am thinking that if I restore this and take it apart it will be gorgeous. Also the glass is very yellowed and has a small crack and if restoring I could put in a new glass and that way can see the numbers on the graph inside. I would have to be protective though of the stamp on the tank which is from the Virginia Dept. of Agriculture weights and measures, would hate to lose it. So what do you think...leave it or restore it?
Restoreing it will take character away but you own it, I have the same problem with some things. I like yours the way it is. good luck.
thanks for the comment EJW, that is exactly my concern with taking away its character. I think though that it would restore very well. I am really on the fecnce about this one and just wanted to hear the thoughts of other collectors. I appreciate your input

I will add that when I'm on the fence, I dont restore, I can allways restore in the future but once done you cant go back, so I wait.
Keep it as it is, has character with it's patina.

I like it just the way it is. Maybe stabilize it with a good coat of wax but other than that I'd leave it alone. I love what you are using it for! Nice sticks. Did you make any of them?
Thanks toolate2, nah I havent made any of the sticks. Most have been given to me or are things I collected along the way. I am a physical therapist so have an affinity for canes and such! I have a bunch of really old crutches too.

You'll be surprised how much the color will come back with a little waxing! It's a very cool thing...
toolate2 you were right, some wax and a little buffing and it really did bring the color out and shined right up. May have to take some new pics of it!
