I have this painting of a woman and I was wondering if anyone could help me out with some more information about it. The painting appears to oil based and it is about 35" tall and 25" wide. I don't know how old it is but I do know it is old. It was very well done and appears of great quality. If anyone could please help me out with any information that they might know about the piece.

I was able to get some more pictures of the portrait, include the back. To my surprise, it included the artist's name.

    The back reads as follows:
    Painted by
    J. W. Venable
    St. Louis, Mo.
    1847

However, the front of the paint looks like it is signed H O M

According to scottvez, this looks to be a Quaker Portrait rather than Shaker.

      Beautifully done painting.

Additional photos of signature or any marks on the surface along with a photo of the back would be helpful.

I would say it 1830s- 1860s. Also, I don't believe that is a Quaker bonnet.

      Good luck with your research.

This portrait appears to be painted by a young J.W. Venable in 1847 in St. Louis. Information about the artist can found in The Encyclopedia of Northern Kentucky, which was published by the University Press of Kentucky in 2009. The Venable article can be found on pages 910-911 in Chapter V. Try googling "NKY.com - The Encyclopedia of Northern Kentucky" and searching "J.W. Venable". Nice work by a yet relatively unknown artist. Mr. Venable did a lot of portrait work. Many of these portraits remain in private family collections.

      Additional pictures are VERY helpful!

I haven't researched the artist-- bookman's information looks to be a great start. The St. Louis connection adds to desirability.

Not sure where you got this from: "According to scottvez, this looks to be a Quaker Portrait rather than Shaker. "

I don't think it is a Quaker or a Shaker!
