Wrapping up my first attempt of a soda machine restoration. Its a Vendo 56 and I think it turned out fairly well. Thought I would share some pics. I put together a larger photo log at

    http://photobucket.com/vendo56

Like all projects it turned out being a bigger job than I expected, but i'm looking forward to doing another one.

Looks great! the inside looks like new, is any of that paint?

No, the original did not have the 10 cent decal, it is there now because I like the looks of it. I have seen untouched machines that have 5cent, 6cent, or 10 cent decals though. Often they had the SpriteBoy or the BottleIn Hand decal as well. Many even have old decals of other brands - say a Pepsi or 7UP stuck on the side. I don't think machines left the factory with decals of any kind other than the Have a Coke message on the side and it was silkscreened, not a decal. I have seen redone machines with tons of decals and even pin striping on them and I don't care for that look, but I do like the 10 cent. In the past this may not have been used as much since the decal would need to be changed if the price changed, but this machine was, is, and will now forever be a 10 cent machine.

      EJW,
The only paint is on the outside of the cabinet. All of the interior is either re-zinc plated (mostly in the bottle mech) or powder coated (faceplate, tub and shelving). Hoping that the powdercoating will essentially last a lifetime versus a hammertone paint finish which I have heard some people using. For the look and durability I like the powdercoat but I really have no history to base it against. It was not that expensive to do the zinc and powdercoat so I would recommend to anyone that they investigate that route.

      Signaholic,
You have some great stuff. I love the old signs but don't know enough about them to feel comfortable knowing if they are original or reproductions. One of the best things about getting into some of this stuff is that my boys are actually getting into it too. My 14 year old actually asked for an old Fostie RootBeer thermometer for his birthday!

Great job on the resto , and I like the 10 C sticker on it also, adds a little pizzazz! I'm with you all the way that it adds to the uniqueness and displayability. Like a vehicle, the first thing I do is add and customize to make it unique, same with these pieces. You did a great job bringing it back to life!
TGBWC is "old school" ,sorry Ray!! :)

      Hi Pickr,

Thanks for the comment. I am actually pretty old school myself. I suspect TGBWC and I would tend to agree more than disagree on things, and I have no issue with his thought on decals. Hey, if your going to put up pics and ask peoples opinions then be prepared for them to give them to you! I'm working on a V-81 right now and I used the same 10 cent decal so maybe I'll photoshop it out if I post pics of it later on :)

      Picking,
Thanks for the comment. At the rate I get one done, I don't think anyone would want me to take on their machine! I did see the 39 on your page, it looks pretty good as it is. How is the paint on it - it looks pretty nice. Your version of the 39, my personal favorite, was originally all red with white letters. A lot of people redid them in your color scheme and some were even redone by Coke in the late 50s. If the paint looks as good in person as it does in the photo would just do some basic cleanup rather than restore. They are only original once!
