This is my 19...(?) Underwood Desktop. I am not sure from which year but the website called http://www.tw-db.com/indexen.htm told me that the machine is from around 1920. I am not sure though. I bought this today from a really nice gentleman for $40,-. It was in great condition when i got to see it and was very well maintained. The gentleman was really nice and took really good care of it.
I would like to thank him for his great sale and it was pleasure doing business with him.
The machine needed some cleaning. A lot of dust collected in the carriage rail over the rail which made it really hard to clean out. But after many hours of detailed cleaning i got it back to work. This is truely a beautiful workhorse and a great writers peace. This machine is for it,s age in magnificent condition. Usually with Underwoods after lots and lots of years they show common problems like the feet that crack and turn into pudding letting the screws through. This machine had great feet. Like new. The other problems these machine usually have is that the ribbon spool turners don't function properly. Well, this machine has none of the problems. Even the corners by the space bar: usually Underwood have a lot of paintchipping going on there. On this machine that is only on the left side. On the right side the paint is great condition. this machine has almost no scratches. No dents, chips or anything. This is truely a wonderfull machine. It even came with the ribbon and dustcover.
The features as usual are:
Colour selecter
Paper release
Carriage release
Margin release
paper bail
1-2-3 line spacing
Manual Tab sets and tabulator
Spring tension meganism on the back
etc.
The logo and the sign:
"Underwood
Elliot Fisher
Canada"
have faded away but makes the black paint even more shinier. You can still see where the logo and all have been a bit when you see the machine in person.
But this is truely a wonderfull piece and a great add to my collection.
Yes, i know. I have a lot of typewriters that i got really cheap but that are really expensive. Great machine.
