This is a very old metal bottle I have in my collection which is very intriquing and is full of mystery to me. I not know any of its history at this time.
It has sketched, colored, pictures which are covered with glass and very faded. It appears to be Japanese in origin (see pictures and writing on bottom of the container). Its weight is similar to what would be typical of pewtor or silver. It is not magnetic (a magnet will not stick to it). It has been covered with some kind of antiquing finish or varnish...after the bottle had been manufactured (some of it is visible on the glass which overlays the sketches). The metal under the antiquing finish is silver in color and is "softer" than iron.
The sketches appear to tell a story of some kind...suffering, a journey, being carrried, being attended to...because the colored sketches are faded it is difficult to discern what is being depicted.
The top is open, the sketches are not accessable from inside the bottle.
Hi
I have the same piece although my pictures look to be diffrent. I was told it was a tea caddy at least 15 years ago when i purchased mine at an Antique show i cost me around 2000 dollars then i am just as confused about it as you are so if you happen to find anything out would love it if you would share.
One Last comment it is suppose to have a matching lid which i could not see in your picture.
