I've just been left an old watch by a relative who passed away recently and, have just done a little research into where he might have got it. Judging by the serial number it was manufactured in 1891 or 92 by American Watch Co. Unfortunately, however, it is just the bare watch without the winder or its cover.

Does anyone know if it's possible to repair and replace the cover of this type of watch. Other than the abovementioned major flaws, the actual workings of the watch look in good condition and I expect that it could be restored to its full working glory - I hope so as it is a beautiful looking watch. Many thanks for any pointers given.

Go on ebay and you'll find a case for it. What is the serial number? If you use this link it'll tell you what size and type of case you'll need. By sidewinder I'm sure you mean the winding stem would be positioned at 3:00...., That means you have a hunter case style movement... and it looks to be an 18 size but check your serial number with this link to be sure.

Many thanks to you both for the input. It turns out it's a 6 size 1892 production. I'll enjoy browsing flea markets to look for a suitable case.
