Here is a vintage sterling silver pin.

I have a good idea of what it represents and what the center piece is made of, but I thought it would be fun to open it up to others.

Please post your opinion on the item.

I will post what I believe at the end of the day.

    Good luck!

The sterling pin is the out line of the island of Oahu and the stone is called cat-eye. I have a cat eye ring posted on my show and tell. The ring was given to my mother by my dad when we lived in Hawaii 1950.

My grandmother had a cat's eye brooch here in Oz! I think I have it somewhere. It's not to be confused with the stone called a cat's eye. It's the 'operculum' of a mollusc: Turbo smaragdus/petholatus etc or Turban snails. It's the animal form of a 'hatch' and nicely is the same round or oval shape of a submarine's breech/hatch. Nature's design copied by man.
Good luck, evil eye mojo jewel.
I'll go for Oahu - well done ttomtucker!

Congratulations-- Great job tom! And great information on the operculum vetraio!

That is pretty much what I thought: The cut out represents Oahu (the middle photograph of the front has the correct orientation). The applied object is an operculum and it is also known as a "pacific cat eye".

I would think that this dates from about the 1940s- 1950s.

I like it because it fits with my WW2 sweetheart and souvenir items.

I believe this may be what is known as "Shiva's Eye". It is an operculum, but possibly from a different species.

Thanks for the information emma-- I'll have to check out a "Shiva's Eye".
