I got this old mallet/hammer from a dealer many years ago. I have seen a few of these over the years but most of them the face is really chewed up from use. This one is in pretty good shape. I am not sure what it was used for originally (maybe from amusement game where you swing the mallet and try to ring the bell, or maybe was used for pegging wood structures, or mabe corking casks?) It is quite heavy, would like to see the guy that could swing this thing all day. I would like to know what it may have been used for, can anyone help?

Personally I use it as a "motivator" to "encourage" my physical therapy patients and add a little humor to their routine.

ha ha very cool jumbo hammer... I have a few like it...one is in nice shape while the other two are a bit more rough.. I was told they were used for wood tent stakes or circus type tents... :)

My guess would be that it wasn't used for anything. The striking face is in to good condition to have actually been used. Perhaps it was a spare or made for display purposes.

I would rule out driving pegs in a post and beam building. You didn't normally use a mallet with that long of a handle or that big of a head for driving pegs. I would guess the tent stakes to hold down a big top. The roundabouts they hired to do the work were normally the town drunks and the larger head gave them better odds of hitting the stake. It is in nice shape for a laminated mallet.
