I found this carving at an estate sale a few years ago. The woman running the sale said her father had brought this as well as some other Asian items home after his service in the Military. I did not ask her any other questions, she was obviously emotional. I've just had it sitting on a shelf collecting dust. I was browsing on line & ran across a very similar piece and the asking price was a pretty big number. I know how things work, just because you see something for a high price does not mean that is what its worth. I guess I am more interested in what type of Jade if that is even what it is? ( I am pretty sure it is, but what do I know?) Is it a Foo Dog, Lion or? Is it a mid century 1950 carving, maybe older, maybe newer etc? Any info would be awesome, thanks in advance, and thanks for looking.
Hi Vintage, I have some similar pieces. I believe it is a Foo dog from the twentieth century. Probably 400 to 800, really depending where you sell it. Don't know the type of jade, hard to tell from photo. I think it is a wonderful piece!
nice piece
I would say it is a Foo dog. What a great find,
Thanks AmberRose,Lundy,jon5412 & Kerry.

LOL.......Thanks scottscuff. Flips are sales lundy, & I will likely head south to the twin cities or head north to Duluth and Canada. It all depends on which area has better estate sales.
nice have fun hope you get some goodies let me know
Looks like a Guardian Lion Foo Dog which we commonly see outside the entrances of Chinese palaces and gardens. It looks like Chinese nephrite material on the images. The bulky and thick carving styles of various body parts suggest that it was probably made during the Republic period (1911 - now) - mid century, earlier or later, your guess is good as mine.
Very Nice!
Have a pair of those in amethyst, they are japanese shi shi dogs, tail up, no ball under foot. The term foo dog is used for just about every asian lion and dog made. Got a 30 pound jade carving of a shih tzu dog and puppy and people call them foo dogs? The shi shi dogs are more rare then foo dogs; nice piece.
