If I remember right, i was told these guys were really tough soldiers!!!!
Hello, The solders in question are actuall Japanese soldiers. This is evident by the officer of the group holding his Shin-Gunto sword. The other troops wear Japanese tunics with early shoulder boards on one of them. I hope this helps.
Yes, they are definately Japanese soldiers, pre-1945. However, your dad could have certainly gotten this in Korea. The Japanese controlled Korea from, I think, 1905. Even some of the current American military posts in Korea were former Japanese military posts. Also, Koreans were conscripted into the Japanese war machine during WWII, at least in labor battalions and as POW camp guards - I'm not sure how else they served, or if the Koreans had distinguishing uniforms under the Japanese.
One thing I'm pretty certain of, is the officer with the sword would be Japanese. I love the moustache and that ribbon bar makes me think he's "been there, done that."
Also, look at the white strips hanging from their pockets - Capture tags? Could this be captured Japanese soldiers? If so, how would the officer still have his sword?
WOW i will look for the original print i copied it 20 years ago and made a 11/14 print in my darkroom. More history now in India in 1944 my dad flew to western China over the mountains in support of The Frying Tigers, and I don't know wher
else he flew possibly everywhere during the war, he came home after the war. Left the army for 6 months came home to Boston sold eyeglasses. Went back to the Army for 23 more years. Went to Korea after that war came home we the family went to Porte Rico with him, then to Thailand early 1960s. He flew around the Far East for many years, so maybe he got this from someone?
Should i blow up any part of this print for you guys i can rescan the big print?
Yes, enlarge the center portion of the picture, with the officer and men around him.
