      I posted my 2 cents earlier but I guess I didn't submit it. What part of this are you calling pewter? Was the original owner from Europe by chance?

      OK, the reason I asked about it being pewter is because it looks like leg to the left has been welded to the circular support. Pewter has a really low melting point and a weld would make a blob puddle on the floor.

      Do you know what a Demijohn is? Glass Demijohns are very fragile and are usually encased in something like this. This might have been the original use and if so probably was a 15 or 20 gallon capacity. Demijohns very frequently were mounted on a pewter base as were some carboys. See if a magnet sticks to the metal base.
