I could use some help with this item. I purchased it about 25 years ago at a garage sale. The person who sold it said it was a Pennsylvania Dutch bible box. Her explanation seemed reasonable, since it had pinwheels carved into it as one would find on hex signs painted on barns in northwest Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Several years ago I saw a box which was somewhat similar, but the owner said it was Mexican made antique box. The similarities were in the hand made iron strap hindges and handle. The box has a hasp on the front so you can put a small lock on it, but this would do no good since you can smash the box open to get to the contents. With all the knowledgeable people who are a part of Collectors Weekly, surely someone would recognize what type of box this is. Thanking you in advance.

I thought of that, because of the chip carving, but I have never seen tramp art boxes with strap hindges, and hand forged iron. Almost all of the tramp art boxes I have seen have lift off tops. You may be right though.

Looks like a Bible box to me :-) With a touch of the look of tramp art but maybe just a good carver and was made for his family . Love it whatever it is !!!!!!!!!!!
