PLANESHAVI…
(2 items)
Found at a recent sale. About 11 1/2" long and about 3 1/4" high at back. Came with saw which has cast iron handle. Holds firmly at all positions. I have never encountered one so small. Does anyone have any idea who made it, its age or origins?
I are you sure that handle is cast iron? If you look at the fence you see rotary marks. Very evenly ground. The base is cast but done with modern machinery.
It appears to be a box made for doing homemade picture frames. Not terribly old but a fun display item I would say.
Handle is definitely cast iron. Both the back and top of the box show milling marks, though I don't believe you can definitively date it from these as milling machines have been around for well over 100 years.
I had a friend who could look at the machining and tell what machining made it. He looked at the spacing and depth. He even had an old dirty chart on the wall he would look at to confirm his decision what machine made the marks and when. He is gone now but not forgotten. I didn't mean to imply your item is new, but rather not as old as some of us so to speak. I am learning that being old isn't as bad as it seems.
The blade tooth design appears to be a double cut that originated in Japan, not sure when though.
