Just picked this up earlier today, bought from a local guy through CL. My first "vintage" bike, all the other ones I have are for a specific purpose (road, mountain, touring/townie, 24" BMX, etc.). Was looking for a project bike to rehab, so we'll see how it goes.
I've been looking through the pictures of other people's rides, and they are so nice! Really well put together, rehabbed/restored, etc. Looking to make this one interesting and pleasing to the eye, with less emphasis on making it period-correct. If anyone has an idea what year it is, I'd love to know. Also, anyone know where I can get a new headlight? The one I have is cracked, can be repaired (in theory), but I like the look of another one I saw on a similar bike (on this site) which is chrome.
Much to my wife's chagrin, if this one goes well (and I think that it will), there will be more in the future.
The last picture (the one of me grinding) was me getting the last fender bolt off. WD-40 and penetrating oil made it move a little, but couldn't get it completely off, so I had to use my Dremel with a cut-off wheel.
Nice bike! I have a Murray X-63 (pics are on here) that was in similar shape when I got it. I kept the paint original (buffed it out though) and cleaned the chrome, etc...of course I went through the bearings too. I probably have over 200 miles on it by now! Btw, that headlight is probably 'un-obtainium'! Check this site, he may have one or can cast one for you; http://www.nostalgicreflections.com/lensesindex.html
or the the CABE forums.
Here's mine!

Thanks for the tip, DavesCoolStuff; I'll try starting there for a replacement headlight.
toolate2, your bike was the one I was looking at and admiring the chrome headlight. Thanks!
I have the same exact bike but yours seems cleaner than mine... I believe it's from the 50s because the 60's models all seem to have a different rear rack. To be honest w/ you, yours is the 2nd one I see w/ that style rear rack. I thought I had a different rack on mine. I was told it was from a Roadmaster Skylark bike. I googled images and came across a few pics and the rear rack is very similar if not the same. As to the headlight I'll just go to Autozone and pick up a can of duplicolor chrome finish spray can. It comes in a small can. Take the plastic cover out and primer it first and then spray it w/ it. I bought a Western Flyer that has a similar headlight and that's how the previous owner claimed to have fixed the issue and honestly it doesn't look bad. Looks pretty chrome. Not perfect but very decent. GL!
