February 17, 2012...Maine...42 Degrees, ground is saturated, unfrozen in spots, went metal detecting...Found this sleighbell, around 4 inches deep. Not much, however, metal detecting this time of year, and being comfortable is unheard of in Maine...Hope this year brings some good items.
We got some metal detectors for Christmas and I can't wait!!!
Do you know what type of detectors you got? and good luck!
They are currently in the garage and its cold out so I am not running out there ;)
Two are kid sized (read lighter) for the kids and one big one. Don't think too fancy. I know they can be pretty complex.
My family and I metal detected a lot in the 70s. Civil war battle fields etc. Used to dress up in black and detect in the middle of the night. Now I think "what the heck were we doing!!!" but as a young kid it was a total blast. Stay up late, dig in the dirt for treasure and play spy! My Dad was a bit of a crazy adventurer.
Lol...Good luck..even if it ends up that you have a lesser value machine..Remember one thing listen for steady tone, when you hit a object. freezing in Maine here also..don't u just love it:(
Found one exactly like it at an Indian village site in AL in the late 50's. Had stylized L's (?) on either side of the slot opening & it was about 1 1/4" in dia.. Made of heavy brass or copper. Seemed to be a sleigh bell but we figured it was traded to the Indians.
