Shortly before my grandfather died in Helsinki, he gave me what I believe is an original black (probably India) ink drawing. It's possible it's a print, but I'm almost certain it's an original. Silly me had it reframed to fit in with my more modern decor, and I no longer have the original frame (which might have helped to identify the artist).

In any case, I'm including a photo of the drawing and a close up of the artist's signature. My grandfather told me that the drawing was done by "a famous" Finnish artist who usually painted landscapes (if memory serves me correctly).

If anyone here recognizes the artist's signature, I would be most grateful. The date appears to be 1928 and the scene is of the tori (market) by the harbourside that still exists today.

I'm sorry for posting this in the posters section of "Art + Photos" but it's the closest fit I could think of.

    Greetings from Toronto,

    Rita

Awesome drawing. It's hard to tell from your photos if it's an original drawing or print bu I'd guess original because the ink lines appear to conform with the texture of the paper. I have no clue who the artist is, but it's a wonderful drawing! I love it!

Thanks for your comments, stefdesign. I'd have to take it out of the frame to be absolutely certain, but I do recall the paper itself being quite textured -- which leads me to believe it's an original. I do a bit of watercolour painting myself, so your comment about the ink lines conforming to the texture of the paper makes perfect sense.

I promise to post back here once I'm able to identify the artist. Although my grandfather did tell me the name of the artist, I didn't write it down. At the time, my focus was completely on my grandfather, and I wouldn't change that now even if I could. Having said that, it would be interesting for me to learn more about the artist. I believe it's just a matter of time and connecting with the right people. I've already sent an e-mail to one museum in Helsinki, and I'll probably contact the art department at the university in that city as well.

      Thanks again for your comments.
