My husband's mother recently gave us a family clock that has been on the mantel for as long as anyone can remember. He is 57 so it is likely older than that. I've searched all over the internet and can only find similar ones that are in wood finish, but cannot find one that has a painted finish. I am wondering if someone painted it since purchase, or, if it is an original paint job from the clock maker.
The clock has GILBERT on the face with smaller words at the bottom of the face "MADE IN WINSTED. CONN., UNITED STATES OF AMERICA." A small "S" and "F" and above the 12. The color is a sort of pine green with bronze gilt in the front and a daisy floral pattern swirled on the front in paint. Inside the back panel in pencil are the words "Darby Nov 3 1925" and a symbol that sort of looks like a W with a line through the top. It has two coils and two chimes. There is a smaller hole in the top of the face along with the two key holes. There is a glass cover door over the face and the clock face seems to be a shiny yellow/white tin. It is 20.5 inches long, 9.5 inches high and a touch over 4.5 inches deep (not counting the protruding glass face door). I have two questions:
Where can I get a key for this clock? (mother lost the original)
Can anyone tell me about this clock's history and if the paint is original?

I just purchased a key at a local clock shop in san antonio texas looks like the same size winding as yours.
Try searching "Gilbert clock key" on eBay. Gilbert keys stayed the same size/config. for ages and chances are you can pick up one that works for a few bucks.
