Total mystery??? The bowl is 11.5" across and it is 8.5" tall. This was in my Grandma's house FOREVER. I have no idea where it is from or who made it. The mermaid is beautifully detailed with a large fish at her feet and the shell headdress. It is a soft opaque blue glass. There is not a ding at all, which stuns me for as long as it's been moved around in storage!! Does anyone have any idea where this little Mermaid came from? It is a family mystery I would love to know. I wish I had had the brains to ask my Grandma when she was alive, but youth is somewhat blind!! Sorry the lighting is not better,it's 5 o morning, and my photography is suffering!!

the images are too blurry to really make out much detail; best I can tell is it is a flower frog, statue and console bowl set. From your description it may be frosted glass; it would be translucent rather than opaque. Here is a link to a similar item noted as Walther Arabella: http://clicksnipwow.com/chataboutdg/img13602.search.htm

TallCakes, I now know how you got your name!!I am in shock. You nailed it. I went to the site, and the top portion of the piece is the EXACT mold I have, only in green. The lady with the "shell" head adornment and fish wrapped at the back of her legs is exact. WOW!!I searched some other Walther items they had, and found the "translucent" blue that this Mermaid is made of. I must learn the proper terminology. It is a clear blue bowl. My next question is Walther was described as a German piece, I will have to Google that. Thank you so much for leading me to exactly the same lady, though the green bowl in your link is more "natural", my bowl is more art deco. I will have to take some different angles of the bowl so that you can see better. Is a flower frog the middle piece with the holes where you put the flowers? Is the name Walther, or Walther Arabella? Thank you so much. I am amazed at the speed with which you found this piece I assumed to be very obscure!! I will google for some more info. Many thanks for many answers, michelle Amieux

Tall Cakes, I went on e-bay and searched Walther Arabella, and there is a pink version, the top EXACTLY the same, yet my bowl is still more art deco than this one too. Thank you so much, the Walther Glas Co of Germany, run by August Walther!! WOW, I LOVE THIS SITE!!!!!

Arabella is the title Walther gave to the glass lady. Arabella was paired with various frogs (flower arrangers) and bowls. Here is a German site with lots of Walther glass pieces where you may be able to locate the bowl. Hard to tell for sure but your looks similar to Juno.

Tall cakes, I'm stunned, YES it is the Juno bowl. The set you saw was exactly the same as mine, except they called that uranium green, and mine is more light blue. I tried to find the right color, but it just said blue,(well blau!!), not differentiating in shade. mine is a light blue, and the bowl is clear light blue where the mermaid appears more frosted blue, but I think that is because there is no flat surface areas to be clear.
Tall Cakes, the people on this site, like yourself, vetraio50, Bellin, Manikin, to name a few are such wonderful people. To spend your time helping the helpless such as myself. I didn't know my Grandparents were Collector's, when I started opening their boxes, I knew immediately that my Garage sale idea was out the window. A couple Googles later, I realized I would not be doing any "Spring Elimination", at all!! It is rather overwhelming, and that is why this site is so important. It helps me so much to know the valuable things and the sentimental things, and I will figure out the rest later. I have learned so much here, Thank You. Michelle

Hi Michelle! Saw Arabella three days ago and the next day came across Metropolis on Sky.
Fritz Lang's movie of 1927 has a scene where the Maria, played by Brigitte Helms cavorts on a bowl supported by musclemen and erotically gyrates in art deco poses and pasties leading young dandies astray!

Vetraio50, My little Mermaid come to life!! Metropolis is up there in my top five movies, with, "The Petrified Forest", "Monsieur Verdoux",(Charlie Chaplin, that was the movie that got his visa pulled), "Night of the Hunter"(Charles Laughton's only directorial work), "Metropolis", and I better leave the last open, "Hunchback of Notre Dame", "Jamaica Inn", ah so many greats. I love that site where she's dancing, very cool!!,

Wasn't Brigitte Helms (aka Brigitte Eva Gisela Schittenhelm) cute!
There's also a amazing picture of here in the robot costume during a break in filming: http://cronoviajes.blogspot.com.au/2012/01/star-wars-alternativo-ii-metropolis.html

      Someone's a Charles Laughton fan!
    17. michelleamieux michelleamieux, 13 years ago
Absolutely, guilty as charged. As a HUGE movie buff, mostly B&W, one of my greatest movie regrets is that the critics panned "The Night of the Hunter", (Robert Mitchum , Shelley Winters, Peter Graves (first film spot),Lillian Gish...brilliant camera work so ahead of his time) and Charles Laughton was crushed and never directed another movie again. Now, of course, it is lauded as one of the great and terrifying religion/sex/money thriller. A must see. I could talk old movies all day long, don't get me started on film noir. P.S. GREAT MOVIE-"All Falll Down", early Warren Beatty, Eva St.Marie, Walter Mathau and the chilling Angela Landsbury, as a mother who is "in love" with her son. Intense!! Another brilliant over-looked gem...Excuse my getting off topic, yes, I am a Laughton fan, fer ser!!
    18. michelleamieux michelleamieux, 13 years ago
O.K. That reminded me, my fifth favorite movie is the original, "The Manchurian Candidate", Lansbury is such a great actress when she's being bad!! Like in"Gaslight". Sorry, no more movie talk!!!!!

Did you know Peter Graves did a TV series here in Australia?
      http://www.classicaustraliantv.com/whiplash.htm
      1959-1961.
He was also the brother of James Arness of Gunsmoke fame!
I didn't know that until you mentioned him last week!
      There's a snippet on youtube!
