My grandfather played and made his own violins. Here's one that I inherited from my mother. I'm doing research to find out when he might have made this violin. He lived from 1882-1965. There were string packages in the case. I thought by identifying what year these packages were produced I might be able to determine about what year he made the violin. It would be great if anyone could help me! The violin is precious to me, with or without the information.

wow what a talent he must have been.

Thanks, senor. I see you have some great looking trunks and it's good you're chatting with Trunker Marvin....he knows a lot!

he will forget more about trunks than i will ever know. Its unusal to find a guy with that much knowledge who so willingly shares it.
      Thanks for your nice comment

i have an old violin that came from my wifes grand parents, ill post it and see if anybody knows anything. Have another one somewhere, that my daughter used when she was little, I think it might be a small one.

i think black diamond strings started in the late 1890s andmarvel tone around 1926 so i would figure made in the 1930sor 40s but really hard to tell

Thanks, vansky.....I've been told by several people now that the string packages date from the 1920s to 1940s. However, these could have been used as replacement strings, so the violin could be much older. I even corresponded with the president of Black Diamond Strings! For the time being, I'm keeping this mystery unsolved. Maybe someone can tell me about the wood he used to make it?

wow thats cool-did he build the case and the bow too?
    9. marcobabe13 marcobabe13, 13 years ago
Thanks, Jeannie. That's a good question....I don't know for sure. My guess is that he made the bow because the wood and stain is similar to the violin. The case is lined with wallpaper and I don't think he would have bothered to do that if he made the case himself, but I really don't know. Thanks for asking.

Can't believe it! I just happened to notice some print inside my grandpa's violin. He wrote on the inside: Calvin Burroughs, Fair Oaks, Indiana, 1928. I just posted a new photo showing the date. Mystery solved!!!
