I bought this at the giant outdoor market at Mont-Martre Paris. It is a massive outdoor market, where I wish I could have bought everything. This was probably .25 cents, and it has remained one of my favorite pieces since the day I got it. I don't know if it is Dutch or German, I think German. Has anyone ever seen one like this?? I know it has to be at least 40 years old, because I got it thirty years ago, and it was definitely not new then. If anyone knows any history, help!! Thank you as always, Michelle Amieux
There is one on ebay now for $119.99, these are 1930's-1940's. Yes it is German.
The translation is small letters on the bottom is roughly "GERB.crowell special manufactory for smoking tobacco gerb 1783 bielefeld"
Thank you packrat-place. I will go look on E-Bay now. I am an E-Bay virgin, but will have to test the waters eventually, as I have TOO MUCH STUFF!! I always worry about the honesty of strangers, but a lot of people use it, so there must be some protections.Well, gotta love those Gypsy market prices!!! The Gypsy markets in Spain and France were incredible in the eighties, before the collector craze took off. I left so many great things, like my Cast Iron Collection, which, of course was a silly thing to collect, when you know you might move back across the pond..I did bring this sign back, it fit perfectly, flat!! Thank you for the info, and thank you Bellin for the love!!
love this sign, has a couple of my fav. subjects, pipes/tobacco/ native American, and great colors to boot. I would love to find one of these!!
pickerknows, my favorite subjects too. I am surprised to see that it is commanding a price of $119.00 on E-Bay, as packrat- place mentioned. That's a lot more than a quarter!! It's great when you get something because you LOVE it, and it ends up being an investment as well!! I will keep you apprised if ever I part with this one, but, I still love it too much!!
Thanks Michelle, appreciate the thought!!

AR8, thank you so much for the info. I am knee deep in my Grandparents estate boxes, some treasures, some trash, and I thought I would try e-bay, though I am computer illiterate and scared of transactions with strangers. Can you tell me a better place to put my items, at least the ones I do want to sell. I am a super novice, only a month ago I learned to take photos and put them on the computer, otherwise I would have more posted, but I keep hitting "learning" glitches. AR8, will you mentor me in the safest manner to try to find a safe place to sell some of these beautiful things that I would keep if I had more room, but the Grandparent boxes put everything in super clutter mode, and I can't take the eye sore!! Please help me if you can. I would like to talk to someone about the honesty of these different "selling marts". Thank you so much for the info, again, wonderful, mich
