I have been eyeing this spoon in my local antique shop for some time now. I know nothing about old spoons, except what I was able to learn by Google today. I believe it is commemorative, but cannot determine what is being recognized. There is a tall ship on the knob end of the spoon, and it is slotted I presume for straining tea. It has some marks on the inside right lower edge of bowl, but I can't make out what the marks are. It is definitely sterling silver, I can tell by the weight, and I'm guessing quite old as it has indications of being hand forged. This is my first spoon, and I am interested in knowing more about it from the experienced collectors.

I agree with Yohanna; it could be Dutch or Continental silver. I will say that sometimes silver plate is heavier than Sterling; the marks are the key.

There is a hallmark on the inner rim leftside when bowl is up, that is a long oval containing the letters "J" "[Backward] S" "X or K?" within the oval. The letter are raised with the background slightly recessed. Any ideas what this may signify?
