Alright, here's my first item entry at this website. This book was printed in 1835 and is full of various work by Akenside. The neat thing is the very crude dust jacket that accompanies it. It's just plain paper with "Akenside" hand written on the spine. It has three flaps on each side, instead of the typical two flaps today. I really don't know whether it was wrapped by the book binder or produced later by a private owner, but the writing on the spine looks pretty old - and so does the rest of the jacket.

Actual printed dust jackets do stretch as far back in time as this book, but those are extremely rare as very few managed to survive until today.

Yup, 303 pages & that's the one you linked to Abebooks. None of those have any jacket.

Typically, jackets from the 19th century are so rare that if you find one - it would most likely be the only one left in existence for that edition.

Yes, I don't know, but it's likely as you say AR8Jason. Some publishers back then, earlier in the 1800s, did wrap up their books in paper envelopes before the book sellers received them and opened them up. Naturally 99.9% of these mostly plain envelopes were discarded when the books were put on display.

But yeah, I don't think this one was an envelope covering the whole book. The dimensions should have been different and there should have been tear marks after it was opened.
