Does anyone know anything about this painting? It was hanging in our summercamp for over 50 years. It's been around since the early 1940s. The subject matter is an Indian going over the falls at Niagara Falls. I've been told it represents the "spirit of the waterfall" warning the canoeist upstream, of the dangers of the falls. I've searched the internet, but can't find anything. This particular painting is signed, and curiously enough it is painted on an actual deerskin. Any help would be appreciated...
twins4memom, I'd guess your painting is an old tourist shop item. It depicts the "Maid of the Mist." The Native American legend of the Maid of the Mist is presented here: http://www.niagara-falls.name/niagara-maid-mist.htm
Thank you Chadakoin, I love the story of the "Maid of the Mist". It will be nice to add another chapter to our families mystery conversation piece. I'd love to find out who painted it and where it originated. Maybe there are other versions of this painting out there somewhere. Thanks again for your help.
