1864 Amoskeag rifle manufactured in Manchester, NH. To my knowledge only 27,000 were built by the Amoskeag Co. because they only manufactured rifles during the war due to a shortage of Southern cotton. It is stamped with the name T. Mcdonall. Any help with the name is appreciated.

I am not familiar with this item my friend. It seems to be a great find though! Here is some a link with some information related to it that may assist you. Good luck! : )

Yours is a Special Model 1861 rifled musket.

Unfortunately your example has been "sporterized" post war which really detracts from value and desirablility for a Civil War collector.

The stock has been significantly shortened and it is missing all of the barrel bands. There is also a good chance that the barrel itself has been cut down. The barrel should be 40".

What do you think the value is?

Depends on the barrel length-- is it 40" or is is shorter?

A full length barrel would make it possible to restock it and put it back into its Civil War configuration.

      It is shorter.

It looks like the modification was done fairly well. Whoever did it added the metal rib under the barrel, so it appears similar to a half stock percussion rifle of the 1850- 1870s time period.

I think that it should bring in the $400- $600 range depending on the venue.

How much if the barrel was 40"?

Toward the high end of the estimate.

I would expect to pay in the $800- $1200 range for one in VG condition.

You ask about a T. McDonall stamping. Is that on the stock opposite the lock? U.S. inspectors marks were usually initials there. Dixie Gun Works cat. has a complete list of U.S. inspectors in the back of the cat.. Find 1 locally or about $5 plus postage for their cat..
