"The Royal Sisters" - J. Sant R.A. pinx / D. Desvachez sculp - c. 1870
If I am incorrect, in this next statement, then by all means, please correct me... This is NOT a print, but a PROOF, of some sort.
Printed on heavy, board stock, with raised 'grain', - very good/bright condition with very little foxing.
Image only size: 9.5"x7.75" Framed to: 18"x15"
Before I had this piece, professionally framed, [Arnold Art Gallery, Newport, RI], I, ever so lightly, ran my fingers, over the image, and could feel the ink lines. Similar to, if you would run your touch, over a crisp, brand-new, dollar bill.
Who are the Royal Sisters? Thanks to, fellow collector, "Manikin", who solved this once, "Unsolved Mystery", the girls depicted in this engraving, are: Queen Victoria's daughters - Helena & Louise
Addendum ~ It's amazing, what we can now find, on the internet! This info, wasn't available, 10 years ago! It seems, that at least a few of these, have circulated, in their lifetime.
Below, is an excerpt, taken from a web resource, whose attributes, are true to form:
~ England c. 1870
This is a beautiful antique steel engraving by David Joseph Desvachez (1822-1902) after a painting by James J. Sant R.A. (1820-1916 ). Both are listed in Davenport's and Sant was a member of the Royal Academy of Art. The engraving is from "The New Gallery of British Art" published by D. Appleton & Co., New York. The artist's names, title and publisher are printed at the lower margin. ~
