This carte de visite (CDV) depicts a soldier from the 14th Corps and was photographed by Phillips.
The soldier wears a four button sack coat with a dark civilian shirt underneath. The photograph dates from some time after OCT 62, when the Corps was established, and before AUG 64, when photographs were taxed.
The 14th Corps fought at Stones River, Chickamauga, the Atlanta Campaign and Sherman's March to the Sea.
Phillips designation of "Photographer, 14th Army Corps" should not be miscontrued as anything official. He simply moved with the Army as a readily available source of work and used the backmark to promote his business.

I have just started going through your posted items, and I love them. I am a history buff, which, of course, means all war memorabilia I find interesting. I guess it is the stories behind the medals that interest me. The Civil War, specifically, the only war(apart that against the Native Inhabitants of America) on American soil is incredible. I lived in New Orleans for many years, and spent a lot of timein the cemetaries, as the above ground crypt designed for flooding is SO beautiful. But so many were young men fallen in the Civil War, and I mean young, 14, 15, 16, very sad. The family vengeance is still alive. Though it was 150 years ago, for some, it was just yesterday. I visited many battlefields, and would try to imagine the strategies of attack, etc. Incredible. I will keep on looking, whenever I get a chance. Thank you again, Mich
Thanks Michelle, I appreciate your visits and comments.
