Today an old friend who knows my love for the good old things brought me this trunk. I love it! When I saw the pic of your Tapestry Trunk I got very excited. I dont know anything about them. Can you tell me anything about what I have here?
Hi and welcome to collectors weekly! Indeed you ave a lovely tapestry covered trunk. Yours would be the second example I have come across to date. Looks like it is a dome top trunk with nice hardware. The webbing on the front is fantastic. Makers sought ways of having their trunks stand out, but each time they did they raised the value of their trunks, which meant less people could afford them, and those trunks became rarer. I am not a trunk expert, but rather an enthusiast. I would hope that other contributors could fill you in a bit more. Without a makers label in the trunk itself if is very hard to know who might have made your trunk. Some makers have specific details on their trunks that make it easier to identify, but I cannot see close enough with your picture to comment on details. I would guess that your trunk was made around 1890. Check the latches for patent dates, which will tell you at the very least its possible earliest date. (they used latches and locks with early dates for many years afterward) I personally do not like painting the metal banding to restore the look. I usually take a little bit of gun oil to shine up the metal a bit. I was hoping to see another example of a tapestry -- thank you so much for posting -- it is a lovely gift. Hope this helps..
Beautiful Trunk. I would love to see a trunk like yours in person.
