This is my 1958 Underwood deluxe Portable typewriter that i bought at the junk store yesterday (Saturday March 3 2012) for $5,-. It is in great condition. I have one that is just alike (My 1959 Underwood Universal Golden Touch) and both work fine. It comes with it's grey case that has a red vynal inside...i don't know if i spelled that right.
As you can see the Underwood decal (button to open the hood) is missing. I bought it without it unfortunatly so i have to look for a replacement for it. The paint is in good condition. It has some minor scratches but overal in good condition. This machine types really nice concidering that it is over 50 years old. I appreciate the fact that people really put effort in building these magnificent bangers and it is too bad that the last factory has closed last year, but still in the city where i live, people still appreciate the typewriters really much, and are really happy with the results they get from me on picture about the cleaned typewriter that has been gathering dust in there garage for the past 20 years. So that is a really nice experience.
Besides the missing decal, this machine is in great shape, i cleaned it and put a new ribbon in it and it is ready to go.

I wondered if you ever had any luck locating the U for your ribbon cover release button. I just picked up an 1958 (or so) Underwood Crest Quiet Tab, and it is also missing the U. :( Am I searching for a needle in a haystack?

No, I never did and eventually sold it...to find another one that did have the U.

Yes, I can understand. However, there are many part machines out there. Right now, I am struggling with a Underwood #5, which it's tension drum is shot, so I need to find a replacement. I might get it fixed to. I will have to see. Ah, yet another project. :) - That's the way it works.
