I was a tomboy for my whole life, and my Mom gave me this doll when I was 35, my first doll!! All I know is that my Mom loved this doll, she had made a necklace for her and yet, for all the playtime, the doll has held up rather well. I can't tell if the velvet turban is dark purple, or faded black, but I believe it is dark purple. Her shoes and socks are precious, dainty silky socks with cloth tie shoes, not to mention the adorable bloomers. I Love this doll for so many reasons, yet know nothing about her. There are no tags or obvious markings. her earrings are made of a rough silver metal, like tin maybe. Does anyone out there recognize this little girl? Thank you, Mich

How tall is she Michelle . 14" is the doll Mary Hoyer started with . My guess is she is 11 and is a world doll :-) Lovely ! Thanks for sharing her . She is made of composition like your other 11 inch one and see the difference in how they held up !

thank you stefd. and thank you DR.Doll, ie:Manikin!! You are incredible!! The only difference between your second post and mine is the turba, the fruits appear to be made of straw as compared to my hard fruited turban. Other than the turban the 2nd, post is exactly like mine, right down to the little sock, shoes and bloomers, though I believe my Carmen is in better shape!! I retired early last night and did not get a chance to answer your question, she is 11"tall. Thank you again everybody, and Mani you are a treasure for all the Doll people here!! Mich p.s. I noticed the initials in front of the 2nd doll, i will go back and look, I wonder what that meant?? Going rightnow.......in everybody, and Mani, you are such a treasure to the Doll people on this site.

Mani,, it's VTG, oh, is that short for vintage? I'm sorry I repeated myself on the last post, I haven't had my coffee yet!! Mich
    7. Manikin Manikin, 13 years ago
Your welcome Michelle and thank you for such kind words :-) yep VTG is short for vintage . Ebay sellers often use that because of amount of letters allowed in title so to get in as much as possible it is short for Vintage . Look at my Unmarked Painted eye Hoyer I listed you will see how much they are alike except the Hoyers are 14 in tall :-) I think this is solved mystery doll .

Mani, this won't be the first time you hear it...I am confused. I just looked at a few Carmen Dolls on E-Bay, saw a Madame Alexander one for $55.00, nearly put in a bid!! I'm here to ultimately eliminate stuff, but she was so beautiful. O.K. Nw my doll is exactly like your second doll posted, except the materials used in the turban sre totally different, mine is velvet with hard fruit, the other is canvas with straw fruit, Could this be simply that my doll was made later? Also, is the second doll posted the Mary Hoyer doll? Or the World Doll? Also, do we have any idea how old she is? I have one more completely uneducated question, and that is, what exactly does "Composition Dolls" mean? I assume it is the material, but just what is that material? O.K., I apologize for my questions, but I know you will wizzz off the answers like that. I was so amazed by your Italian translation of the Ancient Parchment. I just got it in the mail today and will send to the Monsignor. Thank you again, Mani, mich

Also, the design of the dress are the same, as best I can tell, but I can't tell the e-bay's dolls top colors too well, or if it has polka-dots, but appears to have same neckline, sleeves and skirt, minus the braided downward vee on my doll's skirt. It surely appears to be the exact doll and company, just a different year. Thanks again Mani, Mich

Sorry, Mani, I keepnoticin subtle differences. Their faces are so similar, yet my doll has much more pronouncd nostrils, and the nose is different, the rest could be chalked up to different make-up lines. My dollappears to be looking more left, but the second doll is also looking left, it is just that there is more blue around the pupil, that makes it look different. The paoted doll has fuller lips than mine, but that too, could be painting. It is the nostrils, and the sheen the posted doll seems to give off that have me wondering, did they tweek the original design a bit, give her more finery, more defined nose, higher quality fruit and turban?? Because of the shoes and bloomers and outfit, I am sure it is the same doll company, I am just bothered by those slight irregularities. Thank you, Mich

Hi Michelle First ? What is composition . Here is good explanation of how it is made
Composition is generally a mixture of glue mixed with sawdust. Heavier and denser than paper mache, composition is easily molded and is thus an excellent material to make doll heads. Composition was used to make doll bodies for many years, from approximately the late 1870s, long before it was widely used to make doll heads. Since the material a doll head is made from determines the type of doll, only dolls with heads made of composition are referred to as composition dolls.

Dates of Production of Composition Dolls:

Composition dolls were made from approximately 1909 through the early 1950s. The height of the market for composition dolls was the 1920s through the 1940s.

Now regard to slight differences in doll. The molds they used to press composition into were used many many times as they were used repeatly the mold took a bit of a different look when doll came out . The first dolls in mold had finer features the lasy out before a new mold was made began to lose some of the finer details . Hope that answers your question on slight differences . Also the company made several outfits not always exactly alike .
The painted eye mary Hoyer I just posted under my listings . The links are for the composition 11 inch world doll . They do not have a great value but yours is in excellent condition and has a sentimental value that for you makes her a treasure to keep :-)
