I have this old laptop which I used personally many years ago. It still appears to be in good working order and is clean an undamaged. I have scoured the web for advice on its value. Could anybody shed any light on its likely value please?

I am not a vintage computer collector, but probably not much value, and here is why:
"IBM has discontinued service for this portable computer a long time ago, and has no driver downloads, spare parts sale or service manuals on their websites. Download rfl40103.exe (500KB) to make the Reference Diskette or download rfl40103.zip (500KB) and unzip, if your network or browser setup prevents you from downloading executable files.
The executable works in DOS, OS/2 and 32-bit Microsoft Windows, creating a bootable 1.44 floppy diskette for configuration and test of the L40SX computer. Download the Quick Reference PDF and follow the instructions for use of the Reference Diskette starting on page 43.
IBM also distributed a presentation of the L40 SX computer. It will fit on a 1.44 floppy or can be run from a command line in DOS, OS/2 and Windows (also Windows XP). Download L40SXdemo.zip (900KB) - unzip, run laptop.exe and enjoy the VGA graphics made by The SoftAd Group in 1991."
Ancient technology.
Much as I truly respect packrat..............I have to reject the idea it isn't worth much.
It isn't worth much to the average person. However, these old machines are very collectible. Not worth a fortune depending on the model and condition but quite collectible. Computers have been my life since 1980. I went back to college in the late 1990's to get my A+ and network certifications. At age 47 I was the grandfather of my class. All the others were fresh out of high school. 36 of us started and 8 of us finished the classes. I don't keep up with values on old basic or DOS based machines but I do have a few. You need to target your buyer and you will be very pleased.
I gotta love anything computer related. Although my wife may not agree.

I stand corrected, I keep forgetting there is a collector for everything.
I have searched the web and found one of these on Ebay which sold last March (2011) for £63,000!!! Mine is in A1 condition - what do you reckon??
There is a very real market out there for this type item. People collecting or wanting them tend to not let it be known. If you show an interest........the price goes up sort of thing. If you convert pounds to dollars you have an indication of value in terms of a running system.
If I were going to put a value on it I would join a computer collector site or two or three or more. DO NOT get involved with any of the "so called" computer exchanges.
The value is what someone is willing to pay. I would "talk it around" on different sites and get a feel. Probably worth more outside the USA but still a very collectible item here. Most of them were sent to the dump when a new one hit the scene.
